The Seventies House by AR Design Studio Nods to the 1970s
UK studio AR Design Studio has added a single-storey extension to a mid-century “Seventies House” in Winchester, UK. Designed to complement the home’s existing style, the extension features clean lines, minimalist decor, and extensive glazing for unobstructed garden views.

AR Design Studio designed the addition to The Seventies House to complement the home’s existing style, and features clean lines and minimalist decor with extensive glazing for unobstructed garden views.
Inside, a neutral color palette is used to create a sense of tranquillity and to allow the surrounding landscape to be the focal point of the house. Sliding glazed doors provide a strong inside-outside connection while flooding the house with natural light. Pocket doors between the kitchen and the living room allow for flexible partitioning of spaces to provide privacy during events or to allow for a more open floor plan depending on the occasion.
Distinct 1970s character
The Seventies House belonged to the head of a local horticultural society, and the house retained a distinct “mid-century aesthetic of bold colours and furniture of the period”, which AR Design Studio aimed to continue with the extension.
The patio features a timber canopy that creates a dynamic overhang to provide shading from the evening sun and protection from the rain, extending the amount of time the family can enjoy the living space.
