These modern cabins in the woods serve as serene artist studios
Peace and quiet Beauty or space?it?s hard to choose what?s more important for fostering creativity. Fortunately, at this artist residency outside of East Haddam, Connecticut, you don?t have to pick just one.

Fiedler Marciano Architecture designed a pair of artist studios for the I-Park Foundation?s art program where artists of all kinds spend a month concentrating, distraction free, on their work. The 1,000-square-foot buildings sit on 450 acres of land, giving participants plenty of space both inside and outside to work their creative magic.

The studios are designed as a modern take on classic New England style, with pitched roofs and timber siding. Each studio has a porch (with a single chair) and a giant loft-like space that in the past has been used by musicians, who fill it with a grand piano, by painters, who hang their work on the intentionally blank walls. The studio has floor-to-ceiling windows that let natural light into the space all day long.

If the studio itself becomes too constraining, the buildings are steps away from a network of trail paths, which are sure to lead to creative rejuvenation.
