Located in Brampton, Ontario, the St. Elias Catholic Church brings a unique western Ukrainian presence to Canadian architecture. Originally built in 1995, the church was reconstructed after it was destroyed in 2014 by a devastating fire.

The architectural style of the church is known as ?Boyko,? which utilizes wooden architectural patterns with domes arranged in a single line. The domes were clad in diamond-shaped copper pieces measuring 24 inches high and 18 inches wide. The structure contains five domes in total, with the largest weighing over 18,000 kilograms.

Even prior to the fire, the church was replete with architectural flaws. The roofing system was in need of replacement after years of harsh weather conditions caused the roof?s wooden material to deteriorate. The design team sought to maintain the original style of the church while using a more sustainable material for the domes. In order to meet these criteria, they opted to use copper for the reconstruction. The metal has the visual appeal to match the church?s traditional look and has a life expectancy of over 100 years. The Brampton community can now finally rejoice over the return of the beautiful and iconic design of the St. Elias Catholic Church.
