Surprise, surprise: Marriott will now offer home rentals
The hotel chain takes on Airbnb with its new service As the saying goes, If you can?t beat reasonably priced home stays, you might as well offer them, too. Marriott is getting into the home rental game. According to the Wall Street Journal, the hotel chain is launching a home rental platform, Tribute Portfolio Homes, to challenge Airbnb?s massive hold on the market.
Marriott is joining forces with London home rental company Hostmaker as well as a handful of other property management companies to offer rentals on more than 2,000 homes in the U.S., Europe, and Latin America. The launch comes after a pilot program in Europe last year, where the hotel chain tested its take on home rentals, which will skew high-end (prices for stays will range from $200 to $10,000 a night). That Marriott wants a slice of Airbnb?s success is no shock given the surging vacation home rental industry. Marriott is reportedly extending its loyalty program to the home sharing program and will seek to bring a sense of ?consistency? to the sometimes charming, sometimes unpredictable world of home rentals.
Meanwhile, Airbnb just announced some moves of its own, partnering with a developer to fill 10 stories of the iconic Rockefeller Center in New York City with ?apartment-style suites? and amenities that will operate more like hotels than your usual one-off Airbnb rental.
