Matt Fajkus Architecture designed a fancy garage topped by a fancy living space Homes for car-lovers are nothing new?with styles ranging from minimalist to glam. But this purpose-built Austin home has an exceptional balance between the owner?s love of vintage cars and the space needs of daily life.
Designed by local studio Matt Fajkus Architecture, Autohaus is essentially a stylish modern garage topped by an equally gorgeous modern home.

The ground floor is an open single space accessed from the driveway by a set of custom wooden barn doors. Floored with polished concrete and outfitted with a mechanic?s lift and workbench, the garage is a comely but simple setting for the storage and maintenance of up to eight automobiles. Its current occupants are classic cars from the likes of Porsche, Ferrari, and Alfa Romeo.
Above the garage is a compact apartment, with the master bedroom cantilevered 20 feet over the driveway below. Large windows let in ample natural light. From the bedroom, a short hall leads past a wood-paneled study and into the open plan living room and kitchen. The rear of this room is a window overlooking the garage workspace below, while a large shaded terrace runs along the length of the space.
