This whimsical rug is like a visual puzzle on your floor

Can you see all nine faces" Doodles are usually kept to notebooks and scraps of paper, but Jaime Hayon appears to prefer wool. The Spanish artist-designer recently worked with Spanish rug maker Nanimarquina on a line called ?Silhouette?, and the area rugs look like they were ripped straight from his imagination and added to the loom.
The series, which just debuted at the Maison et Objet design fair in Paris this week, feature a playful illustration with thin lines and swooping silhouettes. Nine faces fill the rug, looking toward each other from various angles, punctuated by shapes and colors. Drawn in looping shapes and muted primary colors, the visages appear as optical illusion brain teasers that just happen to be sitting on your floor.

The rugs are hand woven from Ghazni Afghan wool, while the illustration is made from chain stitch embroidery. ?Silhouette? comes in four sizes ranging from 5?7?x7?11? to 9´10?x13?1?. An outdoor version made from recycled PET fiber comes in similar sizes.
The collection will be available in the U.S. later this spring through Nanimarquina dealers such as Design Within Reach; we?ll update this story once pricing is available.
