Strap on your jetpack. The future is now. This summer, flying cars could become a reality. Billed as the ?world?s first passenger drone,? the Ehang 184 was unveiled at CES 2016 in Las Vegas and then tested in the state of Nevada. Its next big stage" Dubai, where it?s slated to go into operation in July.
At the World Government Summit in Dubai this week, Mattar al-Tayer, the head of Dubai's Roads and Transportation Agency, announced that the EHang 184 will begin regular use as a taxi service in the city this summer. The drone will be able to transport a single passenger weighing no more than 220 pounds, for a distance as far as 25 to 30 miles, and for up to 30 minutes in the air at a time. Since there is no driver in the aerial vehicle, the rider sets their destination using a touchscreen. The drone?s progress will be monitored remotely from a nearby command center. There?s no way for the passenger to steer the drone at all, even in an emergency. But let?s be honest, it?s not like they?d do any better than the vehicle?s automatic programming, which supposedly lands the drone in any case of malfunction or mechanical failure.
