World’s Most Beautiful Fireplace Tools from Mjölk in Toronto
New from Toronto shop Mjölk: handcrafted fire tools from a Winnipeg, Canada, studio that will “enrich with use and age”?just in time for winter blizzards. Here’s a look.
Above: The fire tools, available in blackened brass with walnut (left) and brushed brass with oak (right) are handmade by local designer Thom Fougere in partnership with Mjölk. They are inspired by “a long-term study into man’s historical relationship with fire, hearths, and the tools used for tending to a fire,” simplified for the needs of the modern hearth.
Above: The set, shown in brushed brass with oak, includes a poker modeled after a tree branch (a tool that “instinctively lends itself to tending to a fire in the wilderness,” Fougere says); a deep, spade-shaped shovel that efficiently collects soot; a horse-hair brush; and a Shaker-inspired stand; $1,595 CAD ($1,212 USD).
Above: The brush and shovel are fitted with brass loops for hanging. The poker’s leather handle (wrapped by an artisan at the Canada-based shop Sore Hands Old Tools) protects and hands and hides a magnet that affixes the poker to the stand.
Above: The stand’s circular base collects soot and remnants from the tools.
Above: The shovel’s long walnut handle evokes a Japanese chef knife. The tool set in blackened brass with walnut; $1,795 CAD ($1,364 USD) is available to order.
