The building is located in Surry Hills, Sydney We love a good warehouse conversion, and this one out of Surry Hills, Sydney is no exception. The 300-square-meter (3,229-square-foot) apartment takes up the top two floors of the historic Edwards & Co. building, a former 1920s tea factory, and was reimagined by architect Josephine Hurley, who preserved the structure?s old bones by creating a minimalist design scheme.
The home?s main living areas are set on the lower level, where the majestic, arched windows of the old warehouse flood the white-walled, wood-floored open-plan space with gorgeous light. Here, a clean-lined kitchen with white cabinetry, mini stage for grand piano, master bedroom with in-room free-standing bathtub, and additional bedroom with lofted reading nook establish a cozy dwelling. Above this level is what is essentially a separate apartment or guest retreat?with a hidden kitchen, to boot. Lighting on this floor is provided by copper fixtures whose piping climbs the walls in angular patterns, creating an off-kilter but satisfying geometric design. The space opens up onto a roof deck.
