Travels with Larry: Washington, D.C. Part 2
Brewmaster’s Castle
By Larry Peters, Copper Development Association Project Manager & Architectural Applications Specialist
Someone remind me to plan a trip to Washington, D.C. every spring/summer! There is great weather for walking, all the plants either sprouting or in bloom, and of course there are lots of interesting things to see.
The DuPont Circle area is a great place to visit, there are lots of great restaurants and shops, plus it is easy to get to on foot or via the Metro. Unfortunately, especially to the southern side, far too many of the more interesting older buildings have succumbed to the needs of developers but some of the cool stuff remains. Particularly impressive is the copper roofing and ornamentation on the Heurich House Museum. The building was once the residence of Washington?s prominent brewer, Christian Heurich.
Great Batten Seam copper mansard, and tower roof!! Walk around the side for a real treat, though.
Now, that?s some serious copper work.
The house is now a museum and event center, check out the official website for more information. I can?t wait to see the interior! Unfortunately, tours hours are when I usually have business appointments.
