Travels with Larry: San Antonio, Texas
Briscoe Western Art Museum ? San Antonio
By Larry Peters, Copper Development Association Project Manager & Architectural Applications Specialist
Located along the San Antonio River Walk, the Briscoe Western Art Museum is a distinct copper-clad structure in the heart of the city. Designed by San Antonio firm Lake|Flato, the overall museum renovation included the addition of a new copper-clad event pavilion and additional galley space.
As part of the museum expansion, the creation of a courtyard allowed for the display of a number of bronze statues and massive copper alloy entrance doors. The Jack Guenther Pavilion is clad in an interlocking flat seam copper shingle system that has patinated in the few years since its installation to a rich, even brown. There is also a section of standing seam roof over the main area of the pavilion, as well as numerous window and almost reverse gutter detailing. The widespread use of copper and copper alloys in so many forms echoes the surprisingly large number of copper installations in and around San Antonio.
