Travels with Larry: Cincinnati
By Larry Peters, Copper Development Association Project Manager & Architectural Applications Specialist
The people of Cincinnati are making their downtown a more desirable place to live, work, play and visit.
On my most recent trip, I visited the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center . The Center, housed in a beautiful limestone and copper-clad building, according to the Center?s website, ?celebrates the heroes who created the secret network through which the enslaved could escape to freedom, the Underground Railroad.? It provides an excellent venue to showcase the ongoing struggle of people worldwide to break free from slavery and human trafficking. A former slave pen, brought in its entirety from a Kentucky farm, is housed in one wing of the building. It provides tangible witness to that sad period of American history.
The building was designed by Blackburn Architects of Indianapolis, Indiana and Bora Architects of Portland, Oregon after a nationwide competition.
