This Burning Man orb by Bjarke Ingels seeks your crowdfunding dollars
The structure will stretch 84 feet across If you?re looking for out-of-this-world design, you?ll probably find it at Burning Man. That?s no less true of The ORB, an inflatable mirrored sphere that BIG architects Bjarke Ingels and Jakob Lange are hoping to bring to life through crowdfunding.
Ingels and Lange recently launched an Indiegogo campaign to get The ORB off the ground, and aim to raise $50,000 over the next two months. If the team is successful, the giant art piece will stretch nearly 84 feet in diameter?one 500,000th the size of the face of the Earth?and reflect the surrounding landscape of the eccentric arts festival in Black Rock Desert, Nevada.
The group of architects has mostly financed The ORB itself, including the costs of 30 tons of steel and the 2,500 hours of welding and sewing. Much of the fundraising now is going toward necessary infrastructure ancillary to the balloon, such as the mast, a baseplate, and foundation anchors.
Sitting in the centrally-located Playa, the architects intend for the giant sphere to act as a guiding landmark for festival-goers, with lights underneath the structure casting a luminous glow around it and transforming the orb into an oversized disco ball.
So far, the team of architects and artists has raised just shy of $2,000 and is offering backers a range of perks, including postcards, miniature engraved spheres, and a visit inside The ORB itself?if you pony up $5...
