Tammany Hall Redevelopment on Union Square
The makeover by BKSK Architects of the landmarked Tammany Hall at 44 Union Square East forms new / revitalized office and retail spaces.
The key architectural feature is the new glazed glass dome floating over the top floor.
Retail will be located on the lower three floors of this historic building constructed in 1929, with three levels of over 55,000 square feet of office space above. The facades are retained with little intervention.
The property was formerly home to International Ladies Garment Workers Union, Democratic party offices, New York Film Academyand most recently used as Union Square Theatre.
The developer is Reading International and completion is due by the second quarter of 2018.
The Tammany Hall renovation was approved in 2015 by the Landmarks Preservation Commission.
The inspiration for the dome comes from the turtle which Lenape Chief Tamanend stands upon on a statue in Philadelphia; Tammany Hall was named after this famous leader. BKSK Architects says (on their website) the dome is ?meant to be both evocative and respectfu...
