Recycled Wood Church in Indonesia
TSDS Interior Architects was inspired by the traditional architecture of the Indonesian people of Dayak to build a church unlike any other. The Oikumene Church was erected in Sajau, East Kalimantan. The building is made of several recycled woods: a facade of Rimba slats, or teak, while the interior structure uses meranti. The place of worship, according to local traditions, is an elongated one-room dwelling with entrances on the east and west sides. The variable height of the roof improves air circulation inside, allowing it to stay cool all day long when the temperature is around 90 degrees Fahrenheit with over 85% humidity.
