Ottawa?s Parliament Hill gets an Upgrade
After a fire destroyed a large part of The West Block?s roof, the Canadian government made the decision to restore it with a more durable and sustainable material.
The West Block, located in Ottawa, Ontario, is one of three iconic buildings on Parliament Hill. Built between 1865 and 1909, the structure shows an outstanding example of Gothic revival during the second half of the 1800?s.

Standing seam copper was selected to replace the structure?s original material, polychrome slate, and it has remained the material of choice ever since. In fact, the copper roofing, with its cast iron cresting, has been designated as a heritage character-defining element of the building.

When the West Block Rehabilitation Project restarted in 2007, the copper roofing was identified as needing repair, preservation or replacement in accordance with the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada. After deliberation, replacement was done replicating the original installation. In some specific cases, some changes and improvements were incorporated to the details to increase the roof?s durability.
