Situated on a sloping site in the leafy inner-city suburb of Paddington in Brisbane, Onyx House is grounded on a modest 404 metre square lot that is characteristic of the local area.
Despite the moderately small sized parcel of land on which it sits, the dwelling feels much more generous when experienced from an internal perspective. The sloping nature of the site also posed a challenge throughout the design and build of the project.
Essential criteria for the project involved maximising and creating voluminous spaces to the living and ground floor areas and capitalising on the prevalent city views throughout the dwelling. A sense of openness and spaciousness is created through high level ceilings and multiple double-height voids above the entry and living areas.
Large, glazed fenestration contributes further to this, by providing external city views at every available opportunity. Privacy and sunlight is controlled by the characteristic screens to the rear of the home, channelling views through the perforated metal angled screens.
