Each ?box? has a green roof How do you build a house on a steep and rocky coastline" A couple who lives on an island outside of Seattle got an unconventional answer from Prentiss Balance Wickline Architects, who designed the home to mimic the terrain?s cascading form. The resulting house steps down the boulder-strewn hillside in a series of wooden boxes.

The base of the home is lodged into the side of a rocky hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean. On top of it, three other Cypress-clad, green-roofed boxes sit at perpendicular angles, creating a series of stepped, grassy terraces.

Though the 3,228-square-foot home is split into distinct levels, the architects created a continuity with interior stairways that effectively allow the home?s residents to crawl up the side of the hill.

Each of the boxes is designed with a sliding door that allow for easy access to the terraces and clusters of horizontal windows that look out onto the waves. It?s serenely beautiful set-up so long as you don?t look down.
