Observatory by Gitai Architects in the Negev Desert
The minimalist structure entitled “Landroom” is the latest project of the Israeli studio Gitai Architects, a two-person observatory built from crushed earth and stones from the nearby Mitzpe Ramon crater. The architectural work was designed as a refuge, as “a door to the stars in times of crisis,” explains a statement from the firm. Its function varies according to the time of day: during the day it protects from the sun’s rays, while at night it serves as an observatory for those interested in astronomy. With a surface area of 6 square meters, the “Landroom” can accommodate two people at a time. The square structure has a circular interior and opens onto the desert. It was built entirely with earth and sand from the nearby Ramon crater, as well as with stones found on site.
