Modern seaside house embraces recycled concrete
Shantanu Starick
Blocky yet breezy This modern house on the southern coast of Australia is layered with concrete. The project, from Australian firm Takt Studio, puts the material to smart use with an interior outfitted in cool gray and an exterior wall made from massive blocks of recycled concrete that climb upward into a tiered landscaping wall.
The property has two structures?the main house, which sits on a slope and has a large veranda that looks toward the ocean; and a smaller guest house called the ?Jenga House? for its stacked timber facade.

Inside the main house, the architects used simple materials like concrete, pine wood, and subtle terrazzo flooring to create a cool, moody backdrop. A floating staircase made from steel and wood leads upstairs where the the bedrooms provide a dose of color: one is painted in a warm peachy hue and another in a subdued shade of army green.
