The Sol house by the Ranch Mine is an oasis in the city The Sol house, by husband-and-wife team behind The Ranch Mine and the renovation of this 1980s pad, is a new-build, or infill home, on a previously vacant lot in the Willo Historic District in midtown Phoenix. Measuring 2,300 square feet, the residence takes its inspiration from the southwestern urban vernacular of the courtyard house, which typically features a U-shape configured around an open outdoor space.
In the case of Sol, a dramatic cantilevering roof swoops from a wall of glass that faces the pool and the ample outdoor entertaining area with a built-in concrete bench and fire pit. The overhang also offers much needed sun protection and facilitates ventilation into the main part of the residence. Inside, the simple but sleek interiors feature beamed ceilings, open-plan living, and plenty of natural light. The use of mixed materials as seen most clearly in the front of the property also contributes to the natural cooling elements of the architecture. The recessed entrance appears to be carved out of a flared concrete box lined with brick, while three small windows punctuate the wall. In addition to embracing the region?s climate, Sol also revels in the city?s skyline beyond its walls.
