Midcentury home with Japanese influences asks $950K in Colorado

It was designed by locally renowned architect Hobart Wagener Have a nomination for a jaw-dropping listing that would make a mighty fine House of the Day" Get thee to the tipline and send us your suggestions. We'd love to see what you've got.
Location: Boulder, Colorado
Price: $950,000
A Japanese-inspired home in Boulder designed by locally renowned architect Hobart Wagener (AIA) has gone on the market for the first time since its construction in 1960. Gordon Hewes, a researcher and professor, and his wife commissioned the residence after a year?s stay in Japan influenced their sensibility.
The result is a 3,000-square-foot dwelling with a pagoda-style roof and, on the main level, a large open-plan living room that incorporates a dining room that flows into a kitchen, a sitting room, and library corner. Two bedrooms and a bathroom are also found on this floor. Elements of midcentury modern design abound as well, like vaulted and beamed ceilings, floor-to-ceiling glazing, ample built-in storage, and a flexible floor plan. One of the home?s most distinctive features, however, is the balcony study, which is tucked underneath the pagoda roof and runs the length of the house. Its walls are lined with shelves, while windows at either end of the peaked roof allow sunlight to flood the space.
Located at 336 16th Street and within walking distance of Enchanted Mesa trailhead and the historic Chautauqua, it?s offered at $950,000.
