Mardavij Pigeon Tower: Ancient Way of Collecting Fertilizer
Located in Isfahan, Iran, the Mardavij pigeon tower is one of the largest examples of its kind. It reflects the architecture of ancient Iran with its peculiar pattern. The small size of the entrance holes (7X7 cm) inside the towers would enable pigeons to shelter from large birds such as hawks and crows. The purpose of designing such towers to attract pigeons was actually related to agriculture. That is, the droppings of pigeons contain considerable amounts of nitrogen element which has an efficient role in growing plants. So, the farmers would collect these droppings and use them in farmlands that used to be around the towers.
