Revitalizing a Devon Cottage: The Made of Sand Retreat
Studio Weave skillfully added a double-story timber retreat to a Devon stone cottage, revitalizing the family holiday home between London and the countryside. Nestled in the Blackdown Hills, Made of Sand draws its name from the area’s historic role as a local sandpit. Conceived for the clients’ family, friends, and artists, this retreat provides a serene space for connecting with nature and art. Clients Tom Baker and Natalie Silk chose Studio Weave to design an extension that harmonizes with the rural setting while adopting a contemporary style. Merging Old with New
Replacing an old garage and workshop, the new 85 square meter (914 square feet) addition wraps around the original cottage. This design creates two interconnected L-shaped zones. Furthermore, Studio Weave reintroduced a path leading to the central entry hall. On the ground floor, a stainless steel kitchen and bedroom suite open to a wildflower meadow.
