Location: Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
Fit-out of a Sri Lankan restaurant & bar, Lankan Filling Station, based in inner Sydney. Steel shelves filled with colourful spice jars, polished concrete, copper lighting, dark timber and leather seating with a busy open kitchen at one end and a high bar at the other. A long, narrow space makes for a bustling atmosphere where the sambols, hoppers and curries fly out of the kitchen from lunch until late.
Questions and Answers
The client’s brief required an open kitchen with seating, a bar area with seating, and a specific number of diners in a long, narrow space.
The client’s brief was challenging because of the area we had to work with to achieve all items required. Throughout the design process we had concerns about fitting in enough seats without the space feeling over crowded.
Clever planning of the small space resulted in an intimate, bustling restaurant with closely seated patrons, good acoustic control which significantly reduces noise levels, and an efficient team of staff who weave and manoeuvre between tables, chairs and bar-stools.
