A new study looking at population density, walkability, and more ranked the largest U.S. cities The number one most livable city in the U.S. is Jersey City, New Jersey according to a new study from analytics-driven personal finance site SmartAsset. Part of the New York metro area, Jersey City ranked high in population density, walkability, and annual income after housing (averaging about $35,452.) Its close proximity to New York City means that residents can work in Manhattan, earning higher wages while paying less for housing.
The top five most livable cities also included Irvine, California; Plano, Texas; New York, New York; and Honolulu, Hawaii. California fared especially well in the study, with eight of the top 25 cities hailing from the Golden State. Because walkability, population density, and median income after housing, the study also considered three other key factors: the rates of violent crime, property crime, and unemployment. SmartAsset ranked the 93 largest cities in the U.S. according to each metric, giving full weight to all but population density, which was given half-weighting.
Memphis, Tennessee nabbed the bottom-most ranking due to its high rates of violent crime and property crime, in addition to an unemployment rate of 13.4 percent.
