Fontanges Monolithic Chapel in France

Established in 1901, the Monolithic Chapel, or Chapel of St Michael was carved into a huge volcanic rock. This cross-planned chapel includes a Romanesque archivolt, a Vovic stone altar as well as a stained glass window.

Sea Ranch Chapel in California

Designed by James Hubbell, Sea Ranch is a 360-square-foot seashell-shaped chapel. Hubbell took a murex shell as a reference while modeling the chapel although some others liken the structure to a mushroom or a conquistador?s helmet, as well. The winged roof consists of cedar shingles and a bronze spire on top of it. Redwood sidings connect the roof to the lower wall built with local stones.

Wooden Chapel by John Pawson in Lutzingen, Germany

The Wooden Chapel is a highly simplistic chapel that looks like a pile of wood near the village of Unterliezheim in Germany. Constructed out of 61 tree trunks, the Wooden Chapel is also one of the seven rest stops commissioned by the Siegfried and Elfriede Denzel Foundation along a cycling narrow path through the Bavarian Forest.
