Increased Support of the Staircase with Proper Tread and Riser
Increased support of the staircase besides the side stringers sometimes needs dadoes with risers and treads. Those stringers located on open-sided stairs are named “cut stringers”. Also, there are winders (steps that are narrower on one side than the other) used to change the direction of the stairs without landings. The vertical portion between each tread on the stair is called a riser. In some designs of a staircase that gives an “open” stair effect these elements are missing. And, by Wikipedia’s definition, the part of the stairway that is stepped on is called a tread. It is constructed to the same specifications (thickness) as any other flooring.
