House on the cliff
A young couple owns this breathtaking property called “House on the cliff”, designed by Madrid’s architects Pablo Gil and Jaime Bartolome. This house was built in 2015 on difficult hillside plot with 42 degrees step inclination.
The house is dug into a steep cliff face overlook the Mediterranean Sea in Spain. It is buried in the ground, integrated in the magnificent landscape. You must admit that is an ambitious idea from the clients and a ambitious task for the architects.
The house has two floors – big living area with terrace and swimming pool, following the ground of the mountain. On the second floor there are the bathrooms and bedrooms with viewpoints above the roof. This underground home uses the benefits from the ground and its constant temperature of 19.5° degrees. The living area is designed into islands for activity and this area can be easy transformed into a stage or auditorium for 70 people. That means, the house can handle big parties.
Maybe the most complex part of this house is the metallic wavy roof. The roof is formed from a double concrete shell, supported by walls that are 48 feet apart. When seen from below, the roof looks like a skin of a dragon, and like a wave from the sea, when seen from above. The wavy roof is a system developed on a patent by a local engineer.
