Handsome 18th-century estate finds new life as hotel in rural Portugal
Not your average inn File this under: atmospheric hotels made of impressively retrofitted historic structures. Over in Northern Portugal, local design studio PROD has transformed the Paço de Vitorino estate, former residence of the late heir to the Paço de Vitorino Count, into a 15-bedroom hotel that melds the old and new.
The three-story building is made up of a six-bedroom main house, which has been restored to emphasize original details, and two wings, which were once the stables and a warehouse and now hosts nine additional bedrooms updated with a contemporary touch. One highlight is the kitchen, where an added vaulted ceiling allows a large skylight to flood the space with light. And in an interior courtyard with an elevated passageway, rough stone walls and beams coexist with sleek glass panel railings, a vivid example of the kind of material contrasts used throughout the project.
