Hagymatikum: Masterpiece of Organic Architecture in Hungary

Hagymatikum Thermal Bath is a spa complex designed by the most famous Hungarian architect Imre Makovecz and opened in 2012. The complex was the architect’s last and largest project. However, he could not see the final work due to his death in 2011. The construction of the complex took place atop the thermal wells drilled in 1956 in Mako. The form of the domes and the arches references the high-quality onions for which the city of Mako is famous.

Hagymatikum Thermal Bath is a masterpiece of organic architecture in Hungary with its unique interior and roof design.

Inside the structure, there is a 10-meter-tall organic tree of life column that was originally intended to be a waterfall. However, this could have caused impairments in the form of the glued wooden roof structure. The stylized human heads, leaf patterns, and angel wings decorate the interior elements. Meanwhile, the side domes are reminiscent of the Turkish spa culture. The overall structure of the complex comprises 15 normal and adventure pools, a wellness area, a medical care section, a sauna, a children?s area, a restaurant, and a beauty and spa center.
