THE Grey Gardens Grey Gardens, the former home of socialite (and aunt to Jackie Kennedy Onassis) Edith Bouvier Beale, and her daughter?also named Edith?captured imaginations nationwide after a 1975 documentary that detailed the estate?s decay and the squalid living conditions Big Edie (the elder) and Little Edie (the younger) endured.
Now it?s on the market asking $19.95 million, reports The Wall Street Journal.
What do you get for your all those dollars" The gracious 6,000-square-foot Shingle-style home, of course, and nearly two acres of now-manicured grounds, which include a pool. ?The seller,? says the Journal, ?is journalist Sally Quinn and her late husband Ben Bradlee, the longtime executive editor of The Washington Post.? Quinn and Bradlee purchased the estate in 1979 for $220,000 and set to work restoring it for what the Journal estimates totaled an additional $600,000. Of the property, and her decision to part with it, Quinn told the Journal, ?It just wasn?t the same without him,? referring to Bradlee. ?It?s a magical place and we had a magical life there, but that part of my life is over now. I want to move on.?
