Founded in 1893, the Denver Art Museum is one of the largest art museums between Chicago and the West Coast, with a collection of more than 70,000 works of art. On October 7, 2006, the Denver Art Museum nearly doubled in size when it opened one of the country?s most unique structures. The Frederic C. Hamilton Building includes new galleries for its permanent collection, three temporary exhibition spaces, art storage and public amenities. Designed by architect Daniel Libeskind and Denver-based Davis Partnership Architects, the titanium-clad expansion has become an icon for the city of Denver.
The 146,000-square-foot Frederic C. Hamilton Building increased the Denver Art Museum galleries by more than 40 percent, providing much needed space to house more of the Museum?s permanent collection and major traveling exhibitions. The project was Libeskind?s first completed building in North America. The Hamilton Building links to the Museum?s North Building, a 1971 castle-like structure designed by Gio Ponti, via the second-story Reiman Bridge.
