foster + partners has won a competition to design the new headquarters for ?alibaba? ? the world?s largest online retailer and e-commerce company ? in shanghai. situated at xuhui riverside, with views towards the huangpu river and the pudong central business district, the building is formed around a central heart that opens up to create a large and inviting ?urban room?. this creates an active social core, where viewing terraces overlook the central space. the architects designed the building to be a landmark for the company, with features that showcase its working culture to the public.
