estudio galera’s basque pavilion suggests brutalism in buenos aires
estudio galera completes its pabellón vasco ? basque pavilion ? situated rear of an existing residence in buenos aires. the project further includes the renovation of the adjacent pre-existing residence in the same geometric and material architectural language. the project, with its new program, is driven by the search for a connection between the original building and the new as well as consideration for a growing family, a change of use, and the client?s interest in gastronomy. the shared space of the original house is redesigned with the modification of the kitchen, storage, and counter areas and the seclusion of the play area in the interior. a small addition is used as a link between the pre-existing and the new in search of a common language that does not seek adaptation or replication.

estudio galera sites the basque pavilion at the back of the lot, nestled among a grove of aging trees. the new structure serves as a photography studio, pool house with grilling facilities, sewing room, and guest house. the pavilion is oriented inward toward the residence in order to provide inward facing views away from the neighbors. access is aligned with the original house while a dialogue is created between scale, form, and materiality. both the new pavilion as well as the intervention are finished with desaturated bleached wood, suggestive of brutalist concrete. the new construction rests on the summit of a sand dune while a cantilevering overh...
