Elbphilharmonie Voted one of 2018 World’s Greatest Places
This Hamburg concert hall designed by celebrated Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron is essentially a “glass tower perched atop a giant brick warehouse, surrounded on three sides by water”.
The central auditorium of the ‘Elphi’ is clad in 10,000 gypsum-fiber white acoustic panels to assist acoustics for the musical perfomrances below. Each panel has a unique series of divots that scatter or absorb sound.
All panels vary and together the undulating, interlocking matrix creates an optimal sound map across the entire auditorium. Time Magazine World’s Greatest Places list for 2018 has 100 entries spanning six continents and 48 countries:
