Dreamy off-grid escape rises in California wine country
Like a souped-up lean-to It?s a nice life when you can create a holiday home completely removed from the bustle of everyday urban living in California wine country?one that?s also off-grid, no less.
Conceived by San Francisco-based studio Malcolm Davis Architecture, Camp Baird, as it?s called, comprises two simple structures, a ?car barn? and the main house, both of which are clad in weathering, Corten steel and topped with sloping roofs made of corrugated metal.
Effectively resembling a souped-up lean-to, the residence?s focus is on the outdoors, with walls of screens enclosing the kitchen and dining area and looking out onto a pool and the rugged terrain of Sonoma Valley. The interiors are simple, and plywood lines the ceilings. With rooms designed for a variety of uses including as a gym and yoga studio, the 1,550-square-foot retreat, built on 165 acres for a family with active children, provides a simple yet sophisticated opportunity to escape from it all. Take a look.
