Copper Enables a Powerful Architectural Expression for a New Seattle Office
Nestled in the heart of Seattle, 400 Dexter is one of the city?s newest office buildings. The design team of this narrow and long property constructed a high-caliber and memorable building by adding a unique copper exterior.

Over 740 copper panels, each 1 millimeter thick, were used selectively to clad approximately 22,200 square-feet of the building?s exterior. The outside of the building is covered in four  different patinas, which were installed on a predetermined pattern up to the 8th floor. The building embraces copper?s natural oxidation process.
As the copper begins to age naturally, a layer of oxide forms over the red metals as it?s exposed to the elements. This process not only helps add a protective layer, but also changes the panels? color. Over the course of several years, the copper will change to a dark chocolate brown before evolving into the classic greenish-blue patina.

The design team was not only drawn to copper for the aesthetic beauty it added to the construction, but for the materials durability as well as low maintenance and light weight traits.
If you ever get the chance to walk around Seattle, make sure you check out 400 Dexter!
