This cool modern home in Hamden, Connecticut, was designed in 1970 by John Dinkeloo, a founder of architectural practice Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates LLC with Kevin Roche, both of whom worked closely with Eero Saarinen.
Built as his own personal residence, the 3,696-square-foot house features a boxy steel-and-wood construction over two floors characterized by dark wood-paneled ceilings and walls, oak floors, and walls of sliding glass doors that frame views of the 5.78-acre woodsy site. The main living area occupies the top floor, where a sprawling open floorplan comprises a lounge, a dining area, and a long galley kitchen set behind a partition, and which could use an update, while a balcony lines the length of one of the walls. An original sofa Dinkeloo designed for the home that includes built-in side tables made from travertine leftover from a Metropolitan Museum of Art expansion project will remain. A huge master suite with paneled walls and a wood-burning stove is also located on this floor.
