COBE designs denmark’s red cross volunteer house as ‘urban living room’
danish architecture firm COBE debuts its red cross volunteer house, designed as an ?urban living room? for copenhagen. the project serves as an extension of the red cross national headquarters and was designed as a celebration of the work and commitment of the foundation?s volunteers, creating a new meeting place for the 34,000 red cross volunteers. the firm further introduces a new public space in celebration of the city of copenhagen and its citizens.

designed by COBE together with the danish red cross, the building has been conceived as a continuation of the street. an occupiable roof spanning 850 square meters takes the form of a large public staircase extending from the street level to the second floor of the adjacent building. the stepped roof slope presents a seamless reinterpretation of the unique character of the neighborhood. the interior, with a floorspace of 750 square meters, is situated partially below street level and serves as the main entrance to the original headquarters and volunteer center.

upon entering, the visitor is presented with a common arrival area shared by the volunteer centre and the headquarters. to the left, the volunteer house opens up in the form of a terraced auditorium with a capacity of more than 100 attendants. this space leads down to a series of more private conference rooms. the stepped roof surface opens up toward the headquarters, visible from any position within the volunteer...
