The 15,000-mile coast-to-coast trail network was built in the span of 25 years

In 1992, when Canada was celebrating its 125th birthday, someone had the brilliant idea to connect the country with the world?s longest trail. Now, 25 years later, the Great Trail?formerly known as the Trans Canada Trail?is now complete, covering 14,684 miles from coast to coast and winding through all 13 provinces and territories.
Just opened at the end of August, the Great Trail isn't exactly one single hiking trail but rather a network of over 400 individual paths, some of which might need to be explored with bikes, horses, or snowmobiles, and others with kayaks and canoes. It is estimated that four out of five Canadians live within 30 minutes of a section of the trail. The longest section can be found snaking around the Great Lakes in Ontario.
