The motif of arches are found throughout the home The inspiring Victorian additions keep coming out of England, and this interpretation by Studio Ben Allen is no exception. But what makes this particular project stand out is the way in which the extension blends in with the architecture of the original terraced house.
The London-based practice extended a brick home in York by adding two barrel vaults?also made of brick?to the rear garden. The double-arched space now contains the kitchen, small dining area, and, to preserve some outdoor greenery, a courtyard with glass doors and sliders on three sides. The motif of arches continues inside, most notably underneath the concrete sink, where arched cubbies offer a stylish storage option, and in the main floor bathroom, where tall mirrors with curved tops sit above the double vanity. But their use never feels stale, instead imbuing the home with a classic charm.
The use of mixed materials, like raw concrete on the kitchen counter, polished concrete floors, brick walls, and oak cupboards and shelving keep the home feeling fresh yet still warm. Have a look.
