bez+kock architekten adds travertine extension to 17-th century german museum
bez+kock architekten has extended the sauerland museum, a historic existing building housed in the landsberger hof and dating back to 1605, transforming it into the south westphalia museum and culture forum. located in arnsberg, germany, the museum has been renovated and connected to the new, gauingen travertine extension via a bridge that links to the existing building?s basement while offering panoramic views of the city through a large window. all images courtesy of bez+kock architekten

bez+kock architekten has restored the 17-th century building, and added the new extension which now enables the museum to host top-class temporary exhibitions. the new building comprises three floors that create a stepped form from north to south: from the level of the basement of the old building down to ruhrstraße, where the main exhibition space of the museum is located with the large exhibition hall. the extension is connected to the main building via a bridge that leads to the basement of the landsberger hof. by incorporating the two main urban spatial directions of landsberger hof and ruhrstraße, the new building fits naturally into its surrounding neighborhood. at the same time, the dominance of the landsberger hof as a palace on the city wall is preserved in the silhouette of the arnsberg old town. the exterior of the extension is clad in gauinger travertine, which underlines the sculptural appearance of the building. last, individual, cut window openings create a c...
