Artist takes on immigration debate with installation on the U.S.-Mexico border
The piece, erected on the Mexican side of the border, is best viewed from the U.S. Days after President Donald Trump ordered an end to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program?which protects some 800,000 children of undocumented immigrants from deportation?popular French artist JR has erected a billboard-sized installation at the U.S.-Mexico border wall: an enlarged black-and-white photo of a young child, peering over the wall from the Mexico side.
The temporary artwork, installed near the town of Tecate, Mexico, can only be viewed in full from the U.S. side.
According to the New York Times, who spoke with the artist by phone, the work ?was not intended as a direct response to the Trump administration,? but the image it creates does grapple with the meaning of borders. ?I wonder, is this kid worrying about what will happen" What does he think"? JR told the Times. ?At one year old, you don?t see the frontier or which side is better.?

In the Instagram video above, JR calls out to the one-year old toddling up to the larger-than-life image of himself, ?Kikito, that?s you up there!? As if to further underscore his point, Kikito was on the Mexican side of the wall and JR was filming from the other. The installation will stay up until October 2.
