Architectural Copper is Chosen for North Carolina?s First Cathedral
The Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral, in the heart of Raleigh, is the first of its kind to be inaugurated in North Carolina. The designers opted to install a colossal 160-ton copper dome atop the church to not only crown the religious structure, but to provide a unique and meaningful symbol to the residents of Raleigh.

The massive copper dome, which stands at 88 feet and weighs almost 320,000 pounds, can be viewed from miles away around West Raleigh. It took about an hour to raise the dome from the ground and lower it onto the framework where it was secured to the rest of the cathedral structure. At the top of this dome there is a finial with a 50 pound cross that was blessed before it was installed.
