Brooklyn-based architect Lynn Gaffney designed this modern home in the historic area of Ellsworth in Sharon, Connecticut, as her own residence in 2005. Drawing upon her fascination with barns and shed structures, Gaffney created a sustainable retreat characterized by prefabricated structural insulated panels, an overhanging roof clad in standing seam metal, and siding made from composite plastic decking for durability.
Inside the 2,148-square-foot space, the barn-inspired interiors also feature industrial elements like plywood walls and concrete flooring but are balanced by a bright open layout, floor-to-ceiling windows, and sleek finishes. The double-height living room, which frames views onto the 8.37-acre site, flows into the dining room then into the shiny kitchen. Two bedrooms and a full round out the main floor.
Upstairs is the master bedroom suite with soaking tub, as well as a home office and den that opens onto the balcony. Adjacent to the main house is a secondary structure that comprises a two-car garage and an upstairs 600-square-foot guest apartment complete with a sleeping alcove, kitchen, bath, living room, laundry, fireplace, and balcony.
