Anthony White International Painting Symposium
During September 11-22 September 2017 Anthony White was a participant in the International Painting Symposium at the Mark Rothko Art Centre in Latvia.
The Symposium draws from both international and European-based artists and will take place at the Mark Rothko Art Centre at the Arsenale Fortress, in Daugavpils, Latvia – the town of Rothko?s birth.
The residency at the Mark Rothko Art Centre provides artists with a unique opportunity to participate in a transcultural experience in order to critically engage with ideas central to Abstract Expressionist visual arts practice and theories. The symposium provides a space to explore and debate the role and purpose of contemporary art.
The residency and symposium allow for time and provide a fertile environment within which to generate new ideas and works, while also sharing his practise with new audiences and fellow artists.
Two works created by White during the residency will be acquired by the Mark Rothko Art Centre and displayed in the permanent collection.
White’s recent work considers collision points, shifts and ruptures at the site of geopolitical and cultural boundaries, particularly in relation to global immigration crises. Echoing Edward Said?s identification of ?the inextricable links? between Modernism, war and immigration, White’s works are often characterised by an awareness of surface and a preoccupation with physicality and the found object.
