The Mass Table would add a bit of levity to a room The Mass Table designed by Alain Gilles for Italian furniture company Bonaldo is a refreshing twist on the standard dining table. Incorporating an open, birdcage-like base?which also calls to mind the cage crinoline underskirt popular in mid-19th century women?s fashion?and a simple round tabletop, Mass creates a striking, playful image.
The circular top comes in solid oak or walnut wood, black or white glass, four types of marble including Carrara, and ceramic. The metallic base, hefty in its anchoring of the delicate surface that appears to float above it, is available in a variety of matte finishes like bordeaux, coffee brown, racing green, anthracite, red, and saffron yellow. We could picture this cheeky piece of furniture holding court in an elegant European-style apartment, certainly, but also in a more contemporary space, like a sparsely decorated loft, where it might offer a bit of humorous reprieve. Because, let?s face it: It?s difficult to see this table without imagining a flight of cartoon birds flying around in it.
