350 mayors adopt Paris climate accord after U.S. pulls out (updated)
?The world cannot wait?and neither will we? The mayors who previously pledged to ignore President Donald Trump?s climate change policies have upped their commitment after he announced his intent to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris climate accord: At least 350 cities are adopting the historic agreement themselves.
Update, July 10, 8:00 p.m. ET: A total of 350 mayors have joined the Climate Mayors agreement, including the 10 largest cities in America ? New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Antonio, San Diego, Dallas, and San Jose ? along with hundreds of additional cities large and small in both red and blue states.
The group of mayors, who represent more than 65.8 million Americans in 44 states, outlined a plan to align with the other 194 nations that adopted the accord: We will continue to lead. We are increasing investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency. We will buy and create more demand for electric cars and trucks. We will increase our efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions, create a clean energy economy, and stand for environmental justice. And if the President wants to break the promises made to our allies enshrined in the historic Paris Agreement, we?ll build and strengthen relationships around the world to protect the planet from devastating climate risks.
