2D designs are often used in architecture because actually almost every sketch is in two dimensions. Sketching as the first step of developing any project is usually made on a paper with a pencil just showing the main idea the architect crossed in mind. Next, it can be transferred on a big sheet where can grow in details and segments. Or, that can be done on the computer program where the architect do the 2d plan and 3D presentation plan too. That is what many of the architects do, but for seeing the project, sometimes the well done 2D image can show it all.
